Debuted at the show is the CellXPro material range of optimized solutions for sealing battery cells. Aimed at the burgeoning market for electric vehicles (EVs), the portfolio has been developed from the ground up to support manufacturers’ drive for better batteries offering improved efficiency, longer range, faster charging, and more sustainable and durable solutions. It includes ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), fluoroelastomer (FKM) and perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) compounds and various specialist formulations within these compounds to suit battery cell requirements.

Durable EV Battery Sealing
The materials withstand high operational demands and have excellent chemical compatibility, a critical characteristic as only the optimal sealing materials prove durable against chemical interactions between the sealing materials and the electrolyte. CellXPro is specifically designed to provide customer assurance against chemical interactions that can decrease cell performance and battery service life.

Axel Weimann, Director Global Segment Director for Automotive, says: “The CellXPro portfolio leverages Trelleborg’s extensive experience supporting battery cell manufacturers in the specifications and testing of sealing materials specifically for EV applications. Its launch at The Battery Show positions Trelleborg as the sealing partner of choice for battery manufacturers, enabling them to select the right materials with confidence.”

In addition to sealing materials, Trelleborg also provides cell thermoplastic insulators as standalone parts or as multicomponents. The multicomponent technology enables part count reduction as the electrical isolation and functional seal are manufactured as a single part made of elastomer bonded to the plastic insulator. They are produced in very large quantities using highly automated production lines.

Unique Technology for Advanced EVs
Also showcased at the event is the new Stefa® HiSpin® EV40 radial shaft seal, an innovative elastomer product equipped with proprietary technology and engineering to meet the demands of modern electric vehicle (EV) motors. Designed to operate at high surface speeds, it sets a new technology standard, providing superior low-friction sealing while offering exceptional performance and durability for EV applications.

At the heart of the Stefa® HiSpin® EV40 is a technological breakthrough: Trelleborg’s proprietary Phase-Shifted-Wave (PSW) technology. By actively pumping fluid back to the oil side during shaft rotation, this patented innovation ensures superior sealing performance even in highly lubricated conditions. The design delivers consistent sealing efficiency while reducing radial force, decreasing friction and improving powertrain efficiency. Thanks to its symmetrical design, it also offers excellent sealing performance for both directions of shaft rotation in electric motors. HiSpin® EV40 is designed for shaft surface speeds of up to 40 meters per second/131 feet per second, with its low friction properties significantly reducing heat generation at high rotational speeds.

Innovative Sealing for Sensitive EV Electronics
Trelleborg will also feature the Rubore® Washer, a highly efficient solution for sealing and protecting sensitive electrical systems from moisture and corrosion, enabling customers to increase the performance, safety and longevity of their vehicles. It is manufactured using a special production process in which the carrier metal is vulcanized with rubber on both sides, creating a three-layer laminate that is durable and particularly long-lasting. The washer is available in different diameters, metal carrier materials, designs and thicknesses to meet manufacturers’ requirements.

Rubore® Washer is unique, adapting flexibly to surfaces thanks to its rubber layers. Even if the metal countersurface has tiny scratches or cavities, the external rubber layer overcomes and seals surface imperfections.

“Trelleborg has a multi-decade history of working successfully with all the major automotive manufacturers,” adds Weimann. “Customers benefit from our global manufacturing footprint and unsurpassed R&D. But they also have access to local supply options and global flexibility for a robust supply chain, an important asset in times of geopolitical uncertainty.”
