Trelleborg Launches the CellXPro™ Portfolio of Next Generation Sealing Materials for Electric Battery Cells

Growing Demand for Optimized Battery Cell Sealing
The push for CO2-neutral mobility and surging demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to drive innovation in battery technology. Manufacturers seek better batteries offering improved efficiency, longer range, faster charging, and more sustainable and durable solutions.
Marc Gay, Sales Development Engineer, says: “The global push for electrification is transforming the automotive landscape, driving increased sales of passenger and commercial battery electric vehicles for the foreseeable future.
Transformative Technology for EVs
“Trelleborg is at the forefront of EV sealing technology, developing solutions from the ground up rather than relying on technology derived from the combustion engine era. With CellXProTM, developed from our advanced battery testing and R&D regime, we are ideally equipped to advise customers on material selection.”

Improved Sealing a Critical Factor
One critical factor for battery efficiency and longevity is the quality of cell components, especially the seals within the cell housing, which must withstand high operational demands and require excellent chemical compatibility. Chemical interactions between the sealing material and the electrolyte can alter the chemical composition and decrease cell performance and battery service life.
A deep understanding of the chemical interactions between electrolyte, seals, metal terminals and other cell materials as well as their impact on cell performance is critical to successful battery cell sealing. Trelleborg has extensive experience supporting battery cell manufacturers in the specifications and testing of sealing materials specifically for EV applications.
Building on Technology Leadership
Marc Gay adds: “Leveraging our experience, innovative R&D developments and advanced testing protocols, we launched the CellXProTM portfolio. The range positions Trelleborg as the sealing partner of choice for battery manufacturers, enabling them to select the right materials with confidence.

“Trelleborg has a multi-decade history of working successfully with all the major automotive manufacturers. Customers benefit from our global manufacturing footprint and unsurpassed R&D. But they also have access to local supply options and global flexibility for a robust supply chain, an important asset in times of geopolitical uncertainty.”
In addition to sealing materials, Trelleborg also provides cell thermoplastic insulators as standalone parts or as multi components. The multicomponent technology enables part count reduction as the electrical isolation and functional seal are manufactured as a single part made of elastomer bonded to the plastic insulator. They are produced in very large quantities using highly automated production lines.
