Boat landings for offshore oil and gas platforms are built to absorb the impact of energy from berthing boats or vessels. The Boat Landing System consists primarily of the Eccentric Bumper Ring (EBR), Shock Cell, and Rub Strip. It plays an important role in protecting the jacket and vessel when they are berthing, while also resisting the harsh environments at sea and operating in even the most severe weather. On impact by a berthing vessel, the steel surface of the barge bumpers or rubber surface of the Rub Strips, transfer the load to the EBRs and the Shock Cells.
Kinetic energy is absorbed and dissipated as heat and a smaller reaction force against the vessel by the rubber as it undergoes shear and compression. The load is therefore reduced, and the vessel can berth without damaging the jacket structure. The strong bonding achieved between the elastomer and the steel during the manufacturing process, ensures that this arrangement will safely dissipate and reduce the external load without damaging the jacket.
Odin EBR (Eccentric Bumper Ring) are specifically engineered rings of rubber, which are mounted on top of a Shock Cell to provide increased energy absorption performance. Odin EBRs essentially utilize the elastomers unique ability in deflecting normal and lateral impact, to withstand the design stresses that are imposed on a jacket during barge and vessel operations. Odin EBRs can resist high overloads without damage due to its unique internal damping effect.
