Trelleborg acquires Danish Phonix Tag and strengthens market position for roofing products in the Nordic countries

Trelleborg acquires Danish Phønix Tag and strengthens market position for roofing products in the Nordic countries Trelleborg Building Systems has signed a contract in principle with Rieber&Søn ASA for the acquisition of the roofing-related sections of Phønix Tag. The acquired operations are expected to become part of the Trelleborg Group from March 1, 2001. The purchase sum is slightly more than DKK 100 M and the acquisition is in keeping with the Group's strategy of expanding to achieve leading market positions. The acquired sections of Phønix Tag had sales of approximately DKK 385 M in 2000 and have about 360 employees. Production is located at Vejen in the Danish province of Jutland. During the 1990s, there was a gradual concentration and internationalization of the building and construction and building products wholesaling sector. Larger units have been formed, with increasing international operations. The corresponding development is now also taking place in the building materials industry. "In recent years, Trelleborg Building Systems has reinforced its position as one of the leading producers and sellers of sealing and building products made of bitumen, through such measures as the acquisition of Sweden's Trebolit and Finland's Joule OY," says Peter Suter, who heads Trelleborg Building Systems. "This means that Trelleborg now markets strong and well-known products under such brand names as Mataki and Trebolit." During the past five years, Trelleborg Building Systems has undergone extremely positive development in the Nordic roofing market. The acquisition of Phønix Tag further consolidates Trelleborg's position, making it the No. 2 company in the Nordic roofing sector. Phønix Tag is a fitting addition to Trelleborg Building Systems' operations. Synergies will be achieved in product development, purchasing and marketing, among other areas.
