Trelleborg acquires companies in Singapore, Australia and Europe

Trelleborg acquires companies in Singapore, Australia and Europe; creates world-leadership position in fender systems Trelleborg AB has signed an agreement to acquire Hercules Rubber & Chemicals (Singapore), Queensland Rubber (Australia) and the majority of Fentek Marine Systems (Germany). The companies are expected to be incorporated within the Trelleborg Group as of April 30, 2001. The main products are marine fender systems and other infrastructure construction products (for example, bridge bearing systems and tunnel seals). The companies sell their fender systems under a common brand name, Fentek, which is the market leader in Europe and Oceania and is considered as No. 2 globally. The companies also hold favorable market positions with other infrastructure construction products, an area of business in which Trelleborg already occupies leading market positions and expects to achieve synergistic effects. During 2000, the companies had combined sales of around SEK 230 M, with approximately 300 employees at plants in Singapore, Australia, Germany and the UK. "Through the acquisition of these companies, Trelleborg strengthens its position within the fender product area. This means that the acquisition is also in line with Trelleborg's strategy, which is to grow in the polymer materials area by creating market-leadership positions," comments Hans Porat, Deputy CEO of the Trelleborg Group. "Trelleborg occupies a solid position within the fender systems segment in Europe and South America," says Georg Brunstam, President of the Trelleborg Engineered Systems business area. The Fentek Group complement Trelleborg's positions both technologically and geographically and provides us with a sales bridgehead into the Asian market for our specialized infrastructure construction products. "Jointly with Trelleborg's existing organization, we will create a global network for fenders and fender systems and can expect to achieve synergistic effects within production and marketing also other products, among other operations." The global market for fender systems is estimated to be worth approximately SEK 1-1.5 billion per year. Sales are governed by the supply of major projects, which means that the market can vary from year to year.
