Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) of thermoplastic composite tapes using in-situ consolidation is an established process used in many demanding industrial applications. Advances in equipment, materials and fabrication methods have opened new possibilities for lowering weight and reducing costs for aircraft. This whitepaper presents these developments, with key process and material parameters discussed, and shows examples of aerospace structures designed and fabricated using this process.
