The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated the climate targets recently presented by Trelleborg Group. These include the plan to halve direct and indirect CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to the base year 2021 and to reduce Scope 3 emissions along the value chain by 25 percent.

Trelleborg has long been active in sustainable initiatives and is implementing an efficient strategy to reduce CO2 emissions. One of Trelleborg's numerous measures includes the Polymers for Tomorrow task force, which is working on the development of more sustainable materials and practices. The aim is to achieve a share of at least 25 percent recycled or bio-based raw materials by the end of 2030.

Trelleborg’s climate targets, including the above, were validated by the SBTi in December 2023.

The SBTi was launched in 2015. It provides companies with the framework conditions to reduce their own CO2 emissions and those of their supply chain on the basis of scientific findings. The climate protection program now sealed by the SBTi confirms that the new targets meet the global requirements for fulfilling the Paris Climate Protection Agreement. This envisages limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

“We are proud that our climate targets have been validated by SBTi. It is an important milestone that illustrates our ambition to be a sustainability leader in our industry,” says Peter Nilsson, President and CEO of Trelleborg.

Trelleborg measures its entire CO2 footprint using the global standard GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Protocol, which is divided into three areas: Scope 1 and 2 cover the CO2 emissions generated directly by the company itself or indirectly by energy suppliers. Scope 3 relates to CO2 emissions within the supply chain. The n
ew climate targets oblige Trelleborg to halve Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2021. In addition, Scope 3 emissions along the value chain are to be reduced by 25 percent by 2030.

“We are delighted that after a rigorous analysis, SBTi has validated Trelleborg’s ambitious targets to ensure the Group’s activities do not contribute to emissions that breach the Paris Agreement target temperature increase of 1.5 °C,” says Prof. Dr. Konrad Saur, Group Vice President Innovation at Trelleborg.

“As a major global business, Trelleborg proactively embraces the challenge of improving our sustainability. We need to achieve the largest possible difference in our CO2 footprint. Global industry is becoming ever more aware of its critical responsibilities and at Trelleborg, CO2 and circularity are in focus for us and for customers. And focus is what leads to solutions, as this validation by SBTi illustrates.”
