On June 7, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its new highly automated European Service Center in Stuttgart-Gärtringen. Completion of the sustainably designed new building with a floor space of 14,000 square meters is scheduled for April 2023.

Expanding Our Service Portfolio

New services for enhancing Trelleborg Sealing Solutions products are at the heart of the new site. Services include industry-specific solutions, such as cleanroom handling for the semiconductor and Healthcare & Medical industries, sub-assembly for the Fluid Power and Off-Highway industries, and nanostrength coatings, which are relevant for the Food, Beverage & Water industry. Various quality assurance services round out the portfolio, according to Alexander Stapf, global logistics director at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions.

The new, conveniently located European Service Center is being built on a total area of 26,000 square meters. It will provide additional service and office space and will be equipped with state-of-the-art automated intralogistics. The space can be expanded as needed to accommodate further growth.

New Intralogistics Automation Technology

The intralogistics automation system, implemented by Dematic, will streamline the logistics processes in the European Service Center. The system includes a mechanism for the storage and picking of small parts. Making an efficient use of space, the system can hold up to 75,000 containers.  When parts are requested, one of 32 robots will access the container holding the pieces and transport them to one of 26 ports. A pallet warehouse and an automated guided vehicle (AGV) system with ten automated stackers will complement the facility.

In the new 4,100-space pallet warehouse, the AGV, which will be equipped with three automated STILL MX-X narrow-aisle trucks and seven automated STILL EXV high-lift trucks, will ensure the smooth handling of palletized goods. If required, a Dematic Multishuttle with 1,000 container positions will take over the buffering of the picked goods until final dispatch. A conveyor system for pallets and containers will link all subsystems. The new warehouse system will be integrated into the IT landscape by introducing SAP EWM. With this in mind, Dematic is also installing an EWM material flow computer, which, when directly linked to the PLC controls, simplifies the overall system landscape.

European Service Center Partners

Dr. Thomas Uhlig, President Global Supply Chain Management at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions,  praises the project partners involved: "The European Service Center will meet the highest standards of service quality and sustainability, and we are pleased to have found partners for the implementation of the service center, who are experts in their fields.
Alongside Dematic, TMG Consultants is responsible for the general planning and site supervision and has developed efficient, customer-oriented processes. Our general contractor, Goldbeck, is an expert in energy-efficient and sustainable construction. We are pleased to be able to jointly implement a concept that points far into the future."

Sustainable and Modern Work Environment

Peter Hahn, President Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, is proud of the sustainable and flexible building concept: "As with the Innovation Center in Stuttgart, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions attaches great importance to sustainable construction and a modern environment for its customers and employees at the new European Service Center. Both a solar energy system for additional renewable power supply and charging stations for electric vehicles are planned. A flexible and modular room concept similar to the Open Space concept in Stuttgart offers an innovative working environment. A modern company restaurant with healthy, local food and an outdoor seating area is also planned. Both the proximity to the highway and to the regional train station round off the added value for employees, customers and suppliers."
