Advancing Whale Protection Through Navigation Software

Learn how navigation software is enhancing whale protection by integrating real-time alerts into marine operations.

Every year, migrating humpback whales navigate some of the world's busiest shipping routes. Now, technology is helping ensure safer passage. Trelleborg has announced a partnership with Ocean Wise to integrate the Whale Report Alert System (WRAS) directly into Trelleborg's SafePilot Pro navigation software. This innovative integration delivers real-time whale sighting alerts directly to marine pilots through their existing navigation interface, requiring no additional systems and causing no workflow disruption.

This initiative is being implemented in northwestern Australia, where thousands of migrating humpback whales travel through major shipping lanes from June to October. When a whale is detected through Ocean Wise's reporting platform, visual observations or automated detection systems, pilots receive immediate alerts within SafePilot Pro.

The benefits extend far beyond individual shipping lanes. It offers a proactive framework for shipping companies, pilots and mariners invested in protecting marine biodiversity while keeping global commerce moving efficiently.
