Trelleborg’s industrial antivibration solutions operation has made a key contribution to a major tram project in Turkey, after establishing a strategic partnership with the principal manufacturer at leading international trade fair for the rail industry, Innotrans.
Trelleborg was recognized by Ankara-based Bozankaya due to its industry-wide reputation as a quality manufacturer and the extensive product range that fit the antivibration specification for the trams. Bozankaya used the Innotrans show to source a supplier for the multi-million pound tram project in Kayseri, commissioned by Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality, and the organization approached Trelleborg to support it after a meeting at the exhibition in 2014.
Totaling more than 30 trams as an addition to the municipality’s current fleet of 38 vehicles, Bozankaya was appointed to produce the 33 meter long standard-gauge light rail vehicles for the project in August 2014. Once fully operational, the trams will accommodate 392 passengers each and increase daily capabilities of the tramway to over 150,000 people. Trelleborg has supplied 1,200 primary and secondary suspension springs to the manufacturer to be fitted to the trams.
Mehmet Özdemir, Project Manager at Bozankaya, explained: “We attended Innotrans as we had been awarded the contract to manufacture the trams in Kayseri and were looking for reliable suppliers we knew we could trust. Trelleborg’s industrial antivibration solutions operation offered a suitable product that fitted our specification, and we accepted it as a proven and mature product range. Trelleborg was extremely open to working with us and we look forward to completing the project at the end of the year.”
Rod Holroyd, Global Rail Market Manager for Trelleborg’s industrial antivibration solutions, said: “We pride ourselves on our longstanding reputation as a high quality component manufacturer, so we were naturally delighted when Bozankaya selected us based on our heritage and the reliability of our products. We have been attending Innotrans for many years, and this project demonstrates the global scale of the audience who attends and the opportunities that can arise from exhibiting.
“This year was once again a fantastic show, and we were pleased to meet with customers, suppliers and other industry professionals, as well as showcase our vast product offering and provide technical advice and guidance.”
The Primary Metacone Springs are compact suspension units which deliver longer service life, reduced maintenance and increased passenger comfort and reliability. Hourglass Springs, which were supplied for secondary suspension, expedite the need for complex air supply systems. They made from high grade, solid rubber and deliver a host of benefits including high load capacity which ensures optimum passenger comfort.
