Trelleborg Group has, through its business area Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, signed an agreement and finalized the acquisition of the US-based company EirMed LLC. Based in Menomonie, Wisconsin, the company specializes in technical precision plastic injection-molded components, which are mainly applied in medical devices, such as those used for in-vitro diagnostics, minimally invasive surgery, and orthopedics.

The bolt-on acquisition, which will become part of Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical, was finalized by Trelleborg Group on April 25, 2022, and furthers Trelleborg’s ambition to be the partner of choice for medical device manufacturers, providing all materials, components and processes needed to deliver finished devices to market.

Linda Muroski, President of Trelleborg Global Healthcare & Medical, says: “Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical is globally known for our silicone rubber capabilities. We have also been recognized by key customers as their thermoplastic molding supplier of choice. Part of our strategy is to expand our capabilities beyond thermoplastic molding and liquid silicone rubber. To that end, EirMed is a much-needed addition to our business, bringing extensive medical device assembly experience and expanding our capabilities and capacity in thermoplastics. EirMed enables us to enter markets where we previously have not had a presence, specifically the bioresorbable and dental markets.”

Rick Curtis, EirMed President, adds: “We have customers asking us all the time to simplify their supply chain to provide more value. Some want us to source all components, whether they're plastic or not, and then to assemble and package the finished device. Simplifying our customers’ supply chains in this way will enable them to become more efficient, ultimately reducing the complexity and cost of building their products and speeding the time to market for new devices.

“Trelleborg has the capability to support customers from feasibility and prototyping to automation, serial production, and all the phases of development and manufacturing in between. Our acquisition will be viewed extremely positively by our customers, because it says to them that we are going to be your partner regardless of where you fall in that spectrum, we're going to help you be successful, and we're committed to growing with you. That's what leads to long term partnerships.”

Muroski, continues: “I’m excited about our ability to now offer customers fully integrated solutions for finished medical devices. We can take customers from design and concept at our Rapid Development Center to annuity business, making all components in-house. This reduces the need for customers to manage outside vendors, greatly simplifying their supply chains.”

Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical now comprises seven manufacturing facilities in the Americas and Europe, as well as a Rapid Development Center and its global headquarters in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. The business serves customers globally with capabilities including silicone molding, extrusion, sheeting, dipping, and coating; overmolding; plastic injection molding; multicomponent manufacturing; drug-eluting technologies; engineered coated fabrics; and more.
