Sky Tower: a landmark project in a high-rise facade partnership

Trelleborg’s customized seals are incorporated in the Aluprof aluminium facade systems used in Poland’s tallest building – Sky Tower. The skyscraper project was the first in a series of successful collaborations between Trelleborg and Aluprof S.A. on high-rise buildings around the world.

“There are very high demands placed on the seals used in the aluminium and glass facades for high-rise buildings, says Adam Mękarski, Sales Manager Poland for sealing profiles at Trelleborg Industrial Solutions,. “They have to dampen sound, prevent drafts, protect from moisture and absorb structural movement. The big challenge is to find practical solutions to meet the visions of creative architects, so every seal has to be customized.”

Trelleborg worked closely with Aluprof to develop 11 different customized facade seals for Sky Tower, supplying over 200,000 meters of sealing profiles for the Aluprof facade elements. Aluprof is one of the leading European distributors of aluminium systems for the construction industry. As well as facades, the company supplies systems for windows, doors, roller shutters and gates.

Sky Tower, Poland’s tallest building, is the only skyscraper in the city of Wrocław. Completed in 2012, the 51-story, 212-meter-high mixed-use building is a complex of offices, shops, residential apartments and restaurants.

“The Sky Tower project was a special challenge – it required very sophisticated seals for very sophisticated shapes. The seals are extremely large and many of them are multi-chambered,” continues Adam.

“We have many years of experience in designing facade seals and act as a partner throughout the project from material selection to design and testing. Our designers use their knowledge and experience to find the optimum solution for each customized seal. This type of project-specific seal can be very complex and not every supplier can produce such complicated seals. We not only have the necessary advanced production capabilities, but also the stringent quality control to guarantee consistent high product quality for large orders.”

Although Trelleborg has partnered with Aluprof on sealing projects for over 10 years, Sky Tower was the first joint skyscraper project. The successful collaboration has since led to a number of other high-rise projects with Aluprof, including three prestige projects in New York.

“The Sky Tower project showed what can be achieved using Trelleborg engineering know-how,” concludes Adam. “We are very pleased to have continued our partnership with Aluprof with international high-rise projects– projects that all call for very sophisticated facade seals.”
