I attended Cardinal Newman College in Preston completing A levels in Math, Physics and Chemistry, before joining Trelleborg in September 2019 to embark on a 6-year degree apprenticeship programme studying BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
I found out about the Trelleborg apprenticeship program through the SPARK Networking Event at UCLan university, this event involved a number of speed interviews with companies offering apprenticeships in construction and engineering. I chose the apprenticeship from a range of different engineering and construction roles. John Cobley (Manufacturing Engineering Manager) and another person from a construction company, each gave a presentation about their company and what each role would involve. This gave me confidence in my choice, as I already knew a lot about the company from the presentation and knew this apprenticeship was ideal for me.
The event involved 2 rounds of speed interviews after which, I was picked for a further interview at the Skelmersdale site and received a formal offer for the degree apprenticeship.
My apprenticeship involves attending university one day per week, alongside supporting John’s team to deliver key projects at Trelleborg Offshores sites in Skelmersdale, UK.
I am currently working on numerous projects within Trelleborg Offshore which are linked to introducing new capital equipment, improving efficiencies of existing equipment whilst also supporting the Industry 4.0 implementation.
So far, the apprenticeship has given me the ability to learn through the theoretical side of mechanical engineering at university and gain on the job experience in the workplace. As well as getting this experience, I now understand the variety of tasks an engineer may be doing day to day and the types of projects I could get involved with in the future. The apprenticeship program has been really interesting as I have been involved with such a variety of projects – every day there is something new!
I am really looking forward to getting more involved with future projects and tasks as my technical knowledge and experience increases over the coming months and years.
All apprenticeship opportunities throughout 2020 will be advertised on the Trelleborg Careers Page and on the internal notice boards. For further information please contact Loraine Parr, HR Business Partner in the first instance.
