Traditionally, the skip unloading area on an FPSO was provided with steel safety barriers welded to the vessels deck. Inevitably the skip swinging movement created in this dynamic handling environment results in the accidental contact of the safety rails by the skip with rails often being badly bent.
Many companies use vessels of varying sizes to transfer skips loaded supplies to the FPSO’s. Loading points and sea swell conditions often induce large swinging movements into the skips being transferred to the deck of the FPSO. The restricted space of the unloading areas combined with the dynamic nature of the vessels contributes to the safety railing enclosing the skip transfer area being regularly impacted.
Occasionally, the hazardous and destructive nature of the skips being loaded in heavy seas results in the collision or contact with traditional safety barriers, causing serious damage such as broken deck mounts and severe bending, requiring repair. Repair windows are severely restricted by the limitation of ‘hot work’ opportunities.
