Mighty Hikes 2019

Taking on challenges is important and helps me to stay motivated, both in my personal life and in my career. I push to challenge myself at least once a year while simultaneously supporting a charity.

The Mighty Hikes is a series of one-day hiking marathons around the UK, organized by Macmillan Cancer Support. Each Mighty Hike takes you to some of the most beautiful and unspoiled parts of the country.  I first saw the Mighty Hikes advertised on social media and thought it would be a perfect fit for this years’ personal challenge. I really enjoy being active and have a good general level of fitness, so having the opportunity to take part and raise money for an amazing cause is ideal.

I teamed up with two of my friends to take on the challenge. As a group, we decided to take on the Lake District as we had been hiking there before and fell in love with the area. Unfortunately, I was unable to do much training beforehand and naively thought I’d be fine due to my fitness level and passion for walking. I assumed the hikes wouldn’t be too difficult due to the large number of 2552 participants and variety in fitness levels. I was wrong and it was tough.

The terrain was challenging and full of ascents and descents. I was already feeling the muscles tiring in my legs by the 8th mile. After hurting my knee walking downhill at the 15th mile, I was not sure if I was going to be able to finish the hike. I put my head down and ploughed on, I reached that finish line and I cried. I cried with happiness and overwhelming sense of achievement.

My overall time, including much needed breaks, was 10 hours and 3 minutes. I finished 321st out of 2552 participants. I am extremely pleased with this result, even though it was not a race! I am very glad to have taken part and will always go hiking in the Lake District, as it will forever be my favourite place, maybe just a different route!

Next year I hope to take part again, possibly giving the Northumberland route a chance - I think that’s flat 😊
