Environmental Committment

Environment
Trelleborg Wheel Systems' tire products for agricultural and forestry purposes are generally designed with extra width to protect sensitive soils from compacting. In forestry, round tire shoulders minimize the impact on root systems, also in rough terrains. Trelleborg's Environment, Health and Safety policy is applied in all production sites for tires and rims.

Trelleborg Wheel Systems in Tivoli, Italy, is certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. It is located in a park close to a historically and architecturally significant area as well as to a residential area. Environmental impacts of the factory’s production is certainly a sensitive matter, however considerable investments have been and will be made to adapt to the prevailing strict regulations.

Several initiatives
This has meant a series of initiatives that have significantly reduced waste generation and landfilling. Over the last three years, there has been a reduction in the overall waste production equal to 28 percent, the majority of which goes to recycling centers. Internal stowage is now equal to 10-12 m³ a day, which is significantly lower than the regulatory limit (20 m³). Over the last three years there has also been a significant decrease in electrical consumption (-10 percent) and steam produced (-15 percent) for every kilo of tire made.
The factory’s energy source has been converted from combustible oils to methane gas. Another project will create a cogeneration centre for the production of vapor and electricity via gas turbines.

Water recycling
An ambitious recycling project for industrial water is also in the development stage (anticipated completion 2008). This involves the construction of three closed-circuit installations that will reduce overall consumption by 80 percent.

In-house conditions and employee safety have also been addressed through development of new air-conditioning and sound-proofing installations and through annual tracking and monitoring of the factory’s environmental parameters.
