Meet “SuperSealer” Tim van Putten

When October’s soccer-mad SuperSealer isn’t on the sports field, he has other goals on his mind. He talks about Trelleborg’s exciting future sales strategy and how, for him, it’s all about playing the long game.

Who are you?

My name is Tim van Putten and I’m Sales Director at Trelleborg Pipe Seals. I’m based in the Netherlands, covering all regions outside of the Americas.

How long have you worked at Trelleborg and what are your key duties?

I joined Trelleborg Pipe Seals in January 2017, and I’m responsible for global sales of pipe seals for new pipe systems in various materials such as plastic, concrete and clay. Day to day, I’m leading business development for sealing systems with a focus on expanding international sales and customer relationships. Supporting me is an excellent sales team consisting of area sales managers, business development managers and customer service representatives.

What do you like most about working at Trelleborg?

I’ve been in this industry for 20 years now and have B2B experience in international sales across the plastic pipe and building materials industry. Over this period, I’ve come to appreciate the excellent reputation that Trelleborg has built for itself throughout the industry. Now that I’m part of the company, it’s truly a pleasure to be able to work with such a great team of professionals and to deliver great results through our exceptional customer service, technology leadership, product quality and innovation.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your job? 

To grow our business further, we need to continue our geographic expansion and to keep broadening our product range. From a sales perspective, a key challenge will be developing national and regional strategies to achieve our expansion goals, particularly in emerging markets. Digitalization is another key focus area: we need to maximize ease of doing business for our customers through the use of sales apps and online platforms.

How do you see your business area developing in the future? How are you preparing for this?

The water and wastewater industries are coming increasingly under the spotlight and are now top of mind for network owners, municipalities, water companies and engineering consultants. Failing infrastructure, climate change, infiltration and exfiltration, sinkholes, non-revenue water – these are all critical issues for today’s communities.

While advanced economies are also looking to replace aging infrastructure, developing markets are especially driven to improve the supply of quality drinking water and drainage systems in response to rapid population growth and urbanization. However, access to clean water and sanitation is a priority for all countries. Trelleborg Pipe Seals is expertly positioned to offer sustainable, long-term sealing solutions.

What do you do in your free time? 

Ever since I was a little boy, I've been a football fanatic. I'm now in my 40s, but I still play every Saturday in a league for "old men"aged 35 and over. It's getting harder, but there are still a few more years left in these old legs yet. The performance and results are less important than they were; it's all about having fun and enjoying the game. We are sporty family and, when I'm not playing myself, I enjoy watching my two daughters play field hockey. I also really love to travel.
