Whether assisting Trelleborg’s international customers with all manner of complex issues, helping to launch new product lines, or exploring new opportunities in automation and Artificial Intelligence , our SuperSealer for July does it all. He tells us why, after 15 years, his career at Trelleborg is only just getting started.
Who are you?
My name is Rob Brockway. I’m Director of Operations at Trelleborg Pipe Seals, based in Milford, in the US. If I had to sum up who I am professionally, I’d say I’m a “customer-friendly engineer”.
How long have you worked in this position? What are your key duties?
I’ve been in my current role for four and a half years. My role is extremely varied, and no two days are ever the same. For example, a portion of my time is spent implementing new equipment and processes and/or upgrading our existing equipment. I also help deliver technical support to our customers around the world.
At the same time, I’m responsible for managing process engineering and maintenance, and expanding our production capacity – for example, overseeing construction of Trelleborg’s new 18,000-square-feet plant in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Lastly, my work involves supporting the design and implementation of new products, such as the new 8M boot and NSF repair seal.
How long have you been with Trelleborg? What do you enjoy most about working here?
I’ve been with Trelleborg for over 15 years, all in all. If there’s one thing that keeps me coming back day after day, it’s the people I work with. We have an amazing team who always give 100% and work tirelessly to meet our customers’ needs. I especially appreciate the expertise that’s available to us through our R&D group in the Netherlands.
What are the biggest challenges you face in your job?
No matter how much experience I have in my role, handling the wide variety of internal and external requests we receive each day will always be a challenge. But it’s this challenge, as well as the variety, that makes my job so interesting.
“Technological innovation is an area I’m particularly excited about.
There are new pipe seal technologies emerging in areas like automation and robotics
and we are well placed to capitalize on these new solutions.”
How do you see your business area developing in the future? How are you preparing for this?
I see us continuing to be a major player in pipe gaskets. No question about it, our products are the best around. And with our strong customer representatives and sales engineers driving us forward, we’re well placed to continue growing our market share.
Technological innovation is an area I’m particularly excited about. There are new pipe seal technologies emerging in areas like automation and robotics. Here at Trelleborg, we have lots of exciting projects lined up that will allow us to capitalize on these new solutions.
Sure, there will be challenges along the way. In particular, we need to come up with ways to further expand our capacity over the next few years in order to service our growing customer base. But, with the great team we have in place, I know we’ll find a way.
What are some of the recent projects you’ve been working on?
I’ve helped design most of the seals and machinery that we offer today. I love the feeling of working with customers to develop unique new patented products and helping to set up the manufacturing equipment and processes that produce them.
Lately, I’ve also had a central role in the design of two new mechanical seals to repair drinking water pipes, which were recently approved by the NSF for use in the United States. We’ve started showcasing these innovations to customers, and I’ll be helping to launch the products to a wider audience during a webinar on September 20. Watch this space!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love spending time with my family. I am also a passionate motoring enthusiast, and I enjoy getting my hands dirty and working on my cars and tractors in my spare time. When I’m not with my family, or with my cars, you’ll probably find me outside keeping my yard and garden well groomed.
