With 33 years of experience in the industry under his belt, our Southeast Sales Rep for Trelleborg Pipe Seals in the United States, Gary Smith, says he is grateful not just for the opportunity to represent pipe seals but also for the many friends and strong relationships he’s made along the way.
Who are you?
Gary Smith, 68, Southeast Sales Rep for Trelleborg Pipe Seals in the United States.
How long have you worked in this position and what are your key duties?
I started work with the original company, NPC, in October 1983. NPC was later acquired by Trelleborg in 2008 and I have been with Trelleborg since then. My job is to sell our products -- ranging from Kor-N-Seal connectors, coring machines and core drills to BIDCO sealant and gaskets -- to all precast and pipe manufacturers in my territory, which covers North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
What has it been like working with Trelleborg?
In my 33 years with NPC, and now Trelleborg, I have seen this company that I work for grow to be the leader in the industry. With the backing of Trelleborg, we can now develop new products as well as increase our inventory so that we can provide same-day service to our customers. This means that our customers can count on us to supply them whenever the need arises.
What is the key challenge you face in your job?
Our biggest challenge is that we need to stay on top of new products that can help our customers improve their business and service their customers. And our ability to do just this is what makes Trelleborg the best in the industry.
What do you enjoy about working in this industry?
The most amazing thing about working in this industry is seeing how a small precast customer, with just a few forms, can become one of the largest plants in the U.S. in a few short years by using our products to expand his company beyond his wildest dreams!
What do you do in your free time?
I am a Southern boy, born and raised in the Deep South. I grew up hunting and fishing with my dad and brothers, and later, my two sons. Playing football and baseball was a must in high school. These days, I like to shoot sporting clays, play golf and cycle with my wife. My biggest hobby is the restoration of vintage cars. I also do a bit of traveling with my wife, when time permits.
