In 2017, as a fresh new employee of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, I attended my first oil and gas tradeshow which happened to be the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, one of the largest oil and gas exhibition in North America. Professionally, I was very excited to meet colleagues from around the globe, walk the show floor to see other exhibits and learn about the Oil & Gas industry, its products and services.
I also hoped that I would see personal growth myself within Trelleborg after I attended the show, and that is exactly what happened. Attending the exhibition gave me the opportunity to meet face to face with colleagues I only spoke with via email in the weeks prior to the show. I felt lucky to have the chance to try the local cuisine with my colleagues as we grabbed lunch and learn more about them on a personal level via coffee breaks and a company dinner outing.
At the end of show, as our booth was packed away, I realized that by attending I became a part of my company’s history and future as this was my first time at the conference but Trelleborg’s 44th year exhibiting!
For OTC 2018 I had the pleasure of working together with several Trelleborg business areas to plan our exhibition stand. I was afforded the opportunity to learn the inner workings of how our exhibition stand comes together through selecting and agreeing on a range of topics including theme, graphics, visuals, layout, product displays, housing and registration. I learned that tradeshows require a lot of time, patience and conference calls to plan, organize, communicate and collaborate on ideas, gain approvals at different levels of our organization and find my own voice through the process.
I am looking forward most to meeting new colleagues and creating even better professional relationships with the ones I’ve already met on the show floor next week. What I also know is that after long days of standing on my feet at the exhibition, it will be worth it to know that my colleagues helped me develop professionally and personally .
