Ballast Systems
Trelleborg Energy Control Products were awarded the contract to provide a complete Turn-Key solution for GRP Ballast System Pipework for HM Ships Albion & Bulwark LPD(R).
Working with BAE SYSTEMS Design Engineers a complete, fit for purpose, GRP Ballast System was successfully supplied and installed. The installation included 400 field closures per ship and the fitting of an 812mm diameter distribution manifold.
Ballast Systems are designed to transport sea water in and out of ballast tanks. These tanks are located towards the rear of the craft. This allows Landing Platform Dock (LPD) vessels to be raised and lowered in the water. The dock is flooded by filling ballast tanks; this is achieved by a careful controlled combination of pumping and equalisation with the external hydrostatic head. This allows the rapid ingress and egress of craft and troops from the vessel.
HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark are completed and fully operational.
