Andrzej Pilszczek, Business Development Manager within Trelleborg’s pipe seals operation discusses challenges facing the water infrastructure, specifically looking into pipe seal design. Here, we preview the topics that will be raised in his talk.
“A leaking water or wastewater pipe can produce a number of serious problems, from disruption and damage to buildings or infrastructure, loss of revenue and potential contamination concerns. It remains one of the largest infrastructure issues around the world.
“A significant cause of leaks is incorrectly specified or substandard designed pipe seals. Associated errors can include tree root penetration as a result of low compression in the joint, degraded seals due to poor rubber material, seals which move in the pipe caused by a weak structure, poor sealing following incorrect fitting on the spigot or simply, no seals being used at all. High performance pipe infrastructure and an effective water strategy are vital if such issues are to be avoided in the future.
“By eliminating seal related risks, the issue of leaking pipes can be reduced. This relies on pipe manufacturers, contractors and municipalities to ensure that the correct seal is selected for its application. The right pipe seal manufacturer will be able to provide guidance, and guarantee reliability and sealing performance for the duration of a seal’s life.
“As experts in polymer solutions, at Trelleborg we understand the science, behavior and characteristics of rubber. And selecting the right rubber formulation is just one of the careful considerations which must be made to get the best performance from a seal.
“Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) has been used for many years in industry due to its high availability and ability to be processed, extruded and moulded easily. However, in the last ten years, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber has become more common in seals. It has better cross-linking, which ensures longer durability and improved ozone resistance, making it an ideal material for pipe seals.
“There are seals suitable for every water pipe application, including connectors, sewers – both PVC and concrete and high pressure pipes. Connector seals with a triple lip design will enable ease of jointing and resistance to transverse shear load, whilst allowing high levels of angular deflection in the joint. An optimum design is Trelleborg’s Forsheda 910 seal. Seals for high pressure pipes should work effectively under positive and negative pressure – the integrated Power-Lock™ seal and the locked-in Anger-Lock™ seal with a combined lip and compression seals are proven to perform in this application.
“Additionally, for PVC sewerage pipes a flexible and reliable seal is vital, as well as a firm sealing structure and bond. Trelleborg’s Din-Lock™ consists of a thermoplastic elastomer sealing element bonded to a polypropylene retaining ring. In addition, the Sewer-Lock™ becomes part of the socket forming tool used to shape its own seal groove. For concrete sewerage pipes, a seal which can be cast into the pipe or manhole during manufacture and is made from two rubber hardnesses will provide optimum forming and sealing. Trelleborg’s Forsheda 165 seal offers exactly this.”
